The European Union has threatened to block £1.95bn in direct payments to Irish farmers unless the Government implements an EU directive on water pollution by next week.

All EU subsidies could be cancelled from New Year’s Day unless Environment Minister Noel Dempsey introduces sweeping curbs on the spreading of slurry and fertiliser, much of which washes into rivers and lakes.
