McAleese to attend funeral of shot garda today

The President, Mary McAleese, will lead mourners at the funeral mass of garda sergeant John Eiffe this morning.

The 40-year-old father of four was accidentally shot dead by a colleague in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, last Friday.

Up to 1,000 people turned up in Rathoath, Co Meath last night, to pay their respects at the removal of his remains last night.

The Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner will join mourners at this morning's service and the dead man will be buried later with full garda honours.
