Hse of Lords urged to block Real IRA donations
Families of the victims of the Omagh bombing today urged the House of Lords to tonight turn off the tap of foreign donations to the Real IRA.
The terrorist group bombed the Co Tyrone town in 1998 killing 29 people and injuring hundreds more.
The Omagh Victims Legal Trust said the Real IRA continued to try to kill and bomb innocent people.
They said tonight the Lords would have the chance to debate a measure which would curtail the Real IRA’s ability to fund its murderous activities.
‘‘An amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Bill would turn off the tap of foreign donations,’’ said the trust.
‘‘One source of money would be denied to them - although their affiliates would still be able to fundraise in the United Kingdom itself.’’
Passing the amendment would be ‘‘one small but important victory in the war on international terrorism’’, they said.
‘‘The families of the victims of the Omagh tragedy will be watching the members of the House of Lords. We hope that they will support this amendment.’’
