Connemara to benefit from tourism boost

The Government is launching an intensive new bid to boost coastal-linked tourism activities in an area of Connemara.

Marine minister Frank Fahey has authorised a £100,000 pilot project in Ceantar na nOilean, which incorporates the off-shore Co Galway islands of Gorumna, Lettermore and Lettermullen.

Connemara aficionados know the area, connected by road to the mainland, but exposed to the full force of the Atlantic Ocean like no other part of the European coastline, as a unique one of natural beauty.

Currently underdeveloped and still unspoilt, it is reckoned to have the potential to become one of Ireland’s most prestigious holiday destinations, according to Mr Fahey.

He reported today: ‘‘The area has been chosen, together with the Mullet Peninsular in neighbouring Co Mayo, for a major bid to develop its marine tourism infrastructure.

‘‘This underdeveloped area could create a sustainable marine and coastal-based tourism product, supported by integrated state investment and harness the energy and enthusiasm of the local community.

A specially-appointed team overseeing the project will aim to ensure that while the potential of the area to bring in the maximum possible economic benefits is realised, its natural beauty and scenic amenity is preserved.

The group will work towards boosting the development of quality family home accommodation, the creation of high-standard cuisine and appropriate indoor and outdoor leisure facilities, and the establishment of a centre of excellence for Irish traditional music.

It will be made up of departmental officials and local representatives, including Irish language organisations.
