SIPTU slams expected increase in cigarette prices

SIPTU has criticised Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy’s plans to increase the price of cigarettes by 20% next month, saying the move will most affect the less well-off.

John McDonnell, general secretary of the union, said national wage rates are based on low inflation and an increase in the price of cigarettes would lead to high inflation.
