The GESI plant in Clonshaugh is laying off 75 staff in a bid to remain competitive.

It comes as the latest Quarterly National Household Survey has shown that unemployment figures rose in the third quarter of this year to 79,500.

This is a rise of 1,800 over the figure for the third quarter last year and is the first annual increase in the unemployment rate since April 1996.

The figures related to the three months up to the end of August, so they do not include the thousands of workers who have lost their jobs since the attacks on the US in September.
