Rescue bid for stricken trawler

A rescue operation is underway off the north west coast to assist an English-registered fishing trawler that is taking in water.

It sent out a mayday call 280 miles north west of Mayo.

A Nimrod aircraft is currently in contact with the vessel and a UK-based helicopter is on its way with pumping equipment.

The trawler is heading towards Ireland with a crew of 18 - mainly Spanish or Portuguese fishermen.

The rescue operation is being co-ordinated by the Malin Head coastguard.
