US Secretary of State Colin Powell has thanked the Irish Government for allowing the US Army to use Irish airports and airspace in its so-called "war against terrorism".

Following a meeting with Foreign Minister Brian Cowen, General Powell also thanked the Irish people for observing a national day of mourning following the atrocities in New York and Washington on September 11.
