Taoiseach describes Hume as 'a true Irish hero'

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern called John Hume ‘‘a true Irish hero,’’ and greeted his decision to quit as leader of the SDLP ‘‘with a sense of sadness - but also of immense gratitude for his magnificent public service’’.

Mr Ahern added: ‘‘For over 30 years, John Hume has served his party and constituency and laboured tirelessly in the search for a lasting peace on this island.

‘‘In times when violence and hatred have threatened to overwhelm those who sought a political solution, the name of John Hume became synonymous with the refusal to yield to those forces of hatred.

‘‘The philosopher, architect, and ultimately symbol of peace, John Hume never faltered in his insistence that dialogue was the only way forward, never tired in his efforts to persuade others to come round the table, never failed in his belief that a peaceful solution could be found to the problems of this island.

‘‘That commitment to the achievement of a lasting peace was fully recognised in the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize.’’

Mr Ahern said: ‘‘A towering figure, I know we will continue to be inspired by John Hume’s vision, hard work and passionate belief that, with effort and commitment, the people of this island can be united in peace, partnership and equality.

‘‘John Hume is a true Irish hero. He has served his people to the limits.’’
