Man dies on charity walk

A man taking part in a charity walk on Scotland’s highest mountain died of a suspected heart attack today, police said.

The 42-year-old from the North, who has not yet been named, was walking on the mountain track at Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands when he collapsed at about 11.30am.

He had been in a party of about 200 taking part in the fundraising walk for the Ulster Cancer Foundation.

Emergency first aid was administered by trained personnel who were in the group and a rescue helicopter from HMS Gannet in Prestwick and members of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team went to the scene.

The man was taken to Belford Hospital in Fort William but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the man’s details would not be released until next of kin had been informed.
