Grenade 'made safe' in Scariff

Bomb disposal experts have made safe a hand grenade and assorted ammunition that was found in a house in Scarriff in Co Cork earlier today.

Bomb disposal experts have made safe a hand grenade and assorted ammunition that was found in a house in Scarriff in Co Cork earlier today.

The cache is understood to have been left in the house since the War of Independence.

It was discovered by the grandson of a man who served in the Royal Irish Constabulary, the police force which ruled Ireland before independence in 1922.
