Irish hospital waiting lists look set to shorten because of a new initiative by the Department of Health.

A further £8.9m has been allocated to address the problem, bringing the total that has been set aside for the problem to £34.5m for 2001.

The Minister for Health, Michael Martin, said that the money would be used in several different ways to try and lower the numbers on the waiting lists.
