The drug addict brother of assassinated criminal the General who spat his own vomit at gardai has been jailed for two years at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

42-year-old Michael Cahill, with an address at Raheen Park, Ballyfermot, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaulting three gardai on December 12, 1999.

The court was told that Cahill was arrested following an investigation into a burglary.

He became abusive after being taken to Kilmainham Garda Station, and during the interview, forced himself to vomit on the floor.

He then picked up the vomit, put it in his mouth again and spat it at gardai.

Det Gda Sgt Crowe told the court that he had never witnessed such an incident before.

The court heard that Cahill had 24 previous convictions, ranging from possession of firearms, robbery, misuse of drugs and escape from custody, dating back to 1976.

It was also told that he was a chronic user of heroin.
