Gardai are still questioning the 55-year-old man who held is wife at gunpoint for five hours while his house was under siege in Galway.

He freed his wife just before midnight but he did not give himself up to police until five o’clock this morning.

Detectives have retrieved a rifle, an axe, a crossbow and a number of hunting knives from the house near Oughterard.

Four of the couple’s five children were inside the house during the siege, which began after a row broke out between the couple.

The man, who is believed to be from England, is being held under the Offences Against the State Act at Salthill Garda Station.
