Armed stand-off ends peacefully

A stand-off between Gardai and an armed man at a house in Co Galway ended peacefully early this morning.

A unit of Galway Fire Brigade and an ambulance were called to the scene at Oughterard after the man, who was armed with a crossbow and an air pistol, threatened to set himself on fire.

He also held a woman hostage in the house for a number of hours after trapping her in a room around 6pm yesterday.

According to Gardai, the man, who was in an agitated state, is now in custody at Salthill Garda Station.
