Plant explosion kills one and injures more

It is understood one person has died and a number of people have been injured in an explosion at the Lakelands Dairy plant in Killeshandra, Co Cavan.

The explosion happened as maintenance men carried out work in the boiler room of the plant.

The explosion and fire ripped through a tank in the boiler house area shortly after 11.30am today.

Unconfirmed reports say one person has been fatally injured and another seriously injured, while two more have been removed to hospital for burns.

Emergency services are currently at the scene.

The explosion shattered windows of nearby houses and the tank contained crude oil for burning in boilers in the plant.

The steel lagging interfaced with fibreglass took the brunt of the explosion.
