Assembly to discuss Trimble resignation

The Ulster Unionist MP, Jeffery Donaldson has announced that David Trimble’s resignation as the First Minister of the Northern Assembly will place renewed pressure on the IRA to decommission their arms.

The Assembly is scheduled to meet later today to discuss the resignation and Mr Trimble is also expected to elaborate on his reasoning behind the move.

The British Government is also likely to publish to latest report from the International Decommissioning Body today.

It is expected that it will report that the IRA has still not moved to decommission any of its weapons but that it remains in contact with the body.
