Fine Gael Senator wins South Tipp by-election
Fine Gael Senator, Tom Hayes has been elected as the new representative
for the Tipperary south constituency, filling the gap that was left by the
death of his party colleague, Theresa Ahern last year.
Senator Hayes defeated the Workers and Unemployed Action Group candidate, Phil Prendergast by just less then 3,000 votes.
The performance of both the Labour and Fianna Fail candidates will come as a huge disappointment to the party faithful, with both losing votes and support from the last election held in the area.
Ms Prendergast was the surprise package of the by-election and the mid-wife
can be quietly pleased with her performance and has provided herself with
a good platform and a large amount of support which she can use in the next
general election.
