Port confirms abortion ship's application

Dublin Port has confirmed that the so-called "abortion ship" has applied to berth at Sir John Rogerson's Quay for three days from Thursday.

The Dutch "Women on Waves" vessel will carry out terminations 12 miles off the Irish coast.

The port authorities say they can only stop the ship docking at the port if they are acting illegally within Irish waters.

A spokesperson for Dublin Port has confirmed that they received a request for the ship to dock here from June 14 to 17.

He added that the port only has the power to refuse the request if the ship is engaged in illegal activities within Irish waters of if the vessel is not seaworthy.

He said the port will facilitate the request once the ship confirms it will not breach Irish law.

The imminent arrival of the vessel has caused widespread controversy.

It is understood the crew on board the ship have been issued with bullet-proof vests due to fears over their safety.

Protests are also expected on the docks.
