Saville: Man shot dead had just escaped from landrover

The Bloody Sunday tribunal has heard evidence that a man shot dead by soldiers had just escaped from the back of a British Army landrover.

Michael McDaid was one of the fourteen people shot dead.

The Tribunal has already heard evidence that Michael McDaid was detained by British soldiers and put into the back of a landrover.

One witness has said he saw CS gas being fired into the vehicle.

Today the Tribunal was told Mr McDaid had managed to escape from the landrover and had run about twenty yards away when he was shot by a British soldier.

Witness Frankie Boyle, who was a taxi driver on the day of the shootings, also said that the night before the march he saw the IRA moving guns out of the Bogside and up to the Creggan estate.

He said that at 2am he had been on duty and had seen six cars carrying the weapons, wrapped in plastic bags.

Twenty-five men and four women had been involved.

This corresponds with what Martin McGuinness says he will be telling the inquiry, that the IRA moved all its weapons to the Creggan area for safe keeping except for those kept behind for defensive purposes.
