Child benefit rise comes into effect

The increase in child benefit, announced in the last Budget, is coming into effect this week.

More than half a million families will receive the increased allowance at a cost of £330m.

The Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs Dermot Ahern is announcing an increase of £25 for the first two children in a family.

£30 extra is being provided for third and subsequent children.
