BA considers Aer Lingus takeover
British Airways is reportedly considering taking over Aer Lingus, if the Government decides to put the national carrier on the market.
BA could bid up to £300m for the Irish airline, which has been rocked by the foot-and-mouth scare, industrial unrest and sex harassment claims against chief executive Michael Foley.
Confirmation at the end of last week that floating the airline may be abandoned in favour of a takeover by a rival has fuelled speculation in the industry.
British Airways is one of the main aviation players considering its options and could mount a solo bid or team up with a partner.
The Minister for Public Enterprise Mary O’Rourke is expected to consult unions about the future of the national carrier in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile the fallout of the Michael Foley affair continues on the front pages with reports he could be in line for a £3m pay off, but even if Mr Foley accepts, he is expected to continue the battle to clear his name.
