It is predicted that the populations of Kildare, Wicklow, Meath and Dublin will hit 1.6m by the year 2006.

A major study of the four-county region says thousands more homes are needed to meet spiralling demand.

The ESRI report was compiled by economist Edgar Morgen Roth.
