The Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has denied that his party was involved in any "dirty tricks" against an independent unionist candidate in the Fermanagh/South Tyrone constituency.

Jim Dixon withdrew from the race for the seat last night, claiming initially he had been the victim of a smear campaign by the UUP, an accusation he later amended to "fellow unionists".
