The union said drivers have been forced to work longer hours to absorb rising costs.

Branch official Gerry Brennan said drivers had received only a 15p increase in fares since 1984.

The Consumer Price Index had risen by 58.9% in the same period, while the average industrial wage had been upped by 132%, he said.
