Garda technical experts are continuing to examine the scene of a fire at a house in Co Meath overnight in which two young sisters were killed.

Anne-Marie and Michelle Fitzsimons, aged eight and five, died in the blaze at the bungalow in Ballin Valley, about two miles from Oldcastle off the Kells Road, shortly after midnight.

Four other children, a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and five-year-old twin girls are being treated along with their parents for smoke inhalation in Cavan General Hospital.

The bodies of the dead children were taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.
