Ahern under pressure to intervene in teacher’s row

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is under pressure to intervene in the teacher’s pay row following yesterday’s rejection of Labour Court recommendations by the ASTI.

Once again industrial action is returning to the classrooms and there is a new threat to the oral exams of the Leaving and Junior Certificates.

Action will start next week.

Fine Gael says the Taoiseach must intervene immediately and has again slammed the handling of the row by the Minister for Education Michael Woods.

Parent’s groups and student bodies are also expressing dismay that the row is once again to hit classes.

For his part Dr Wood’s has announced that he will immediately start recruiting staff to replace the teachers as examiners for the Leaving and Junior Certs.
