The State is to appeal an award of £255,000 made to the family of a 23-year-old autistic man, Jamie Sinnott from Ballinhassig in Co Cork.

The award was made last October after the High Court ruled that the State is compelled to provide free primary education for severely mentally handicapped, autistic and other people with special needs.

The Department of Education said it will appeal the award to the Supreme Court to clarify points of constitutional law.
