Saville Inquiry: Woman recounts brother's death

One of the teenagers shot dead on Bloody Sunday gave his mother money for her birthday as he set off on the ill-fated civil rights demonstration that day, his sister said today.

The claim was made by Mary Bonner, whose brother Hugh Gilmour, 17, was one of 13 men killed when Army Paratroopers opened fire in Londonderry’s Bogside district on January 10 1972.

She told the Saville Inquiry into the shootings how she saw two of the other killings from her home in the Rossville Flats.

She also told of having seen the feet and legs of her dead or dying brother as she looked down but that she was unaware of who he was.

The hearing in the Guildhall, Derry, heard Mrs Bonner recall having Sunday lunch with her parents, a sister and Hugh, before he set off with some of his friends.

‘‘There were seven or eight of them and I watched them go from my mother’s flat,’’ she said.
