Meath accident victims were from Midlands

The three men killed last night in a road accident in Co Meath are understood to be from the Longford/Westmeath area.

The head on collision occurred between a Fiat van and an articulated lorry in Moyvalley on the main Dublin-Galway road.

It is understood that all three men were travelling in the van.

While the cause of the accident is not yet known, the road was icy at the time as temperatures had started to plummet.

The accident led to long traffic delays with tailbacks for several miles.

Investigators will be examining the scene of the tragedy this morning.

Meanwhile, roads across the country are in a treacherous condition this morning following a widespread frost.

Motoring organisations and the Gardai are advising motorists to use extreme caution.
