160 jobs lost at Gateway plant

Computer giant Gateway is to shed 160 jobs at its plant in Coolock, Co Dublin.

Gateway computers employs 1600 staff at its plant in Coolock and chose Ireland as one of its main European production centres.

The Gateway factory was visited by US president Bill Clinton in 1998 where he and the Taoiseach made history by writing the first e-commerce signature.

However, recent downturns in the computer industry have forced the company to engage in rationalisation.

Meanwhile 49 full-time jobs are to go at the Icon centre, the flagship leisure and entertainment complex at the Leopardstown race course.

This brings to 624 the number of jobs lost in the Republic since January 1.
