TUI to back ASTI over exam supervision

The Teachers Union of Ireland has said it will support its ASTI colleagues by refusing to supervise the Leaving Certificate if the Minister for Education fails to move on the matter.

The Teachers Union of Ireland has said it will support its ASTI colleagues by refusing to supervise the Leaving Certificate if the Minister for Education fails to move on the matter. The TUI said the sheer scale of work involved in the State exams demands the efforts of both teachers unions.

TUI President, John O'Gorman, said it would be wholly unacceptable if Minister Michael Woods brought in non-practicing teachers to oversee the exams. The TUI would not countenance such a move as it would fatally undermine the status of the exams, he said.
