Man jailed over false statement on crash
Kieran Keane, aged 26, a father of two from Claughaun Avenue, Garryowen, was a front seat passenger of the car involved in the accident which occurred near St John’s Cathedral.
Along with the driver, Keane fled the scene.
He told gardaí that the car, owned by him, had been stolen.
However, Garda Aled Harkin who investigated the accident had trawled CCTV material from locations near the accident which showed Keane had been in the car at the time.
Keane later admitted he gave false statements to gardaí.
Injuries he received in the impact required surgery and he initially claimed he had had a fall leaving a pub.
Jailing Keane for nine months, Judge Tom O’Donnell said the accused, who had previous convictions, lied to gardaí which he compounded with a further signed statement.
However, Garda Harkin’s work in securing CCTV material had exposed the lies, the judge said.
The driver of the car has been charged separately.
Judge O’Donnell ordered Keane’s jail sentence should not commence until January 2 next.
The accused’s father, also Kieran Keane had been abducted and murdered in January 2003.
