Daughter watched as father shot, inquest hears
David Douglas of Killalla Road in Cabra, Dublin 7 died on July 1 2016. He died as a result of gunshot injuries, an inquest into his death, which opened at Dublin Coroner’s Court, heard.
Mr Douglas, a former Dublin zookeeper, was standing in the doorway of a shop owned by his wife Yumei when he was shot. His daughter witnessed the shooting. In a deposition read out in court, she said she rang 999 on the shop phone after the shooting.
“I knew he was shot because of the loud bang and because and I saw him. The man who works in the crèche next door John was there with me first and then the guards. I told the guards it was my dad who was shot,” Miss Douglas said in her deposition.
“He was lying on the floor inside the shop door. I told the guards my dad’s name, David Douglas,” she said.
Family present in court for the opening of an inquest into Mr Douglas’ death included his brother and a brother in law. A post mortem examination carried out by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy found the cause of death was gunshot wounds.
The shooting took place at the shop on Dublin's Bridgefoot Street around 4pm on July 1 last. Mr Douglas was rushed by ambalance to St James's Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Detective Inspector Paul Cleary of Kevin Street Garda Station said criminal proceedings in relation to the death have commenced. DI Cleary applied for an adjournment until after criminal proceedings are complete and Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane adjourned the inquest.
