Gardaí appeal for help to solve man’s murder

Anthony Rodgers, an amputee who used a wheelchair, was stabbed repeatedly at his home in a small south inner Dublin housing complex on Sunday.

Neighbours discovered the man, still alive, at his home in the Robinson’s Court complex, off Cork St, at around 2pm and alerted emergency services.

The victim was brought to nearby St James’s Hospital, but surgeons could not save him and he died there a short time after.

Superintendent Patrick McMenamin of Kevin Street Garda Station appealed to anyone in the Cork St area between 2pm and 3pm to contact them.

However, he singled out a particular individual they wanted to talk to.

“We are also appealing to a person that was there described as wearing a light-coloured grey hoodie, beige baseball cap, navy tracksuit bottoms and white runners,” said Supt McMenamin.

He said this man may have had the hoodie pulled up over his cap.”

Asked if they suspected this was the killer, he said: “No, we’re not saying that. We’re interested in anyone in Cork Street area, but this is a person who we’d like to come forward and would like to speak to.”

Supt McMenamim confirmed that the deceased had suffered stab wounds and had a disability and used a wheelchair.

He said there was no firm line at this stage in the investigation: “We’re very open minded at this stage.”

He said the murder scene was sealed off and that the Garda Technical Bureau was conducting an analysis for DNA, fingerprints and fibres.

He said the divisional search team was scouring the nearby area for any discarded items of interested, including knives or clothes.

Supt McMenamim said gardaí were conducting door to door inquiries in the area and were harvesting the locality for any CCTV.

He believed people might have seen something or someone suspicious.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01-666 9400, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666111, or any garda station.
