Sliney brothers happy to share drawing skills on new app
Marvel comics artist Will Sliney and his brother Aidan, who developed the successful Soundwave music tracking app, have joined forces to launch the ‘Learn How To Draw’ app, which the pair hope will allow Will to impart his know-how to those who are looking to follow in his footsteps.
The pair say the app — launched today — aims to create simple to use, but in-depth, tutorials for every level of artist.
Tutorials will be broken down into an unlimited number of steps and will launch with more content than most how to draw books, with even more content being added regularly.
“Ever since I started as an illustrator in comics, the spirit of the industry has always been to share your learning with others,” Will said.
“I took my portfolio to conventions where every artist would always give me advice on improving my drawings.
“This quality of sharing one’s knowledge really became apparent to me when I was invited into Marvel for a talent workshop,” added Will. “There I received one to one training from some of the industry’s best artists, all who enjoyed passing on their skills to the next generation.
“Comic book art really is a special community unlike any other in this regard.
“Since then, and due to the platform my own work has given me, I’ve tried my hand at live workshops, college lecturing, and open tutorials, but I have found that the requests for lessons only grows as I move further along in my career,” he said.

Will said that the app is the next step in sharing his knowledge with the next generation of emerging artists.
“This app is hopefully the answer to that; a place where we can create modern tutorials and share them in a way that was previously impossible. A place where any artist can study every individual step of of the process, in a way that surpasses even if I was standing alongside the user themselves,” he said.
Aidan’s Soundwave app, which tracks what music fans are listening to on their devices, was acquired by Spotify, the world’s largest streaming service, earlier this year.
Now he is turning his attention from audio to visual art.
“The Learn How to Draw app is built with simplicity in mind,” Aidan explained.
“The tutorials are the core and focus of this app. Optimised for all screen sizes, enjoy learning how to draw on your phone or tablet. Don’t worry if you complete all the tutorials as there is new content every Monday,” he said.
The App is available now on Android 4.1 or newer, and is free to download.
The majority of the tutorials will be free, though some advanced tutorials will cost 59c.
The pair say that all of the beginners’ tutorials will always be free, and that an iOS version of the app will follow shortly.
