Nearly 1,700 Leaving Certificate grades from August have been revised upward after rechecks were sought.

The number of students who have benefited is unclear as there were nearly two results, on average, submitted for recheck by each of the 5,465 people who appealed a grade to the State Examinations Commission (SEC) this year.

Of those 9,500 individual grades appealed, 1,698 — or almost 18% — were successful. Despite an increase this year in the number of overall grades awarded in August, from 387,047 to 391,353, both the numbers appealed and the number of upgrades are down slightly on corresponding figures in 2015.
