A new UK-style law banning forced marriages will be discussed by cabinet today.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald will put forward the plan alongside separate moves to strengthen domestic violence laws, further discussion on the Brexit fallout, and ongoing debate on the budget.

While under existing laws forced marriages — which differ from arranged marriages as the latter involves agreement by the individuals involved — are tackled when a complaint is made, they are not specifically outlawed.
