Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar admits the country “could and should” be making more of an effort to find work for those rendered jobless during the economic crash.

His comments were in spite of the fact there are now 15,400 fewer people classed as “unemployed” compared to 12 months earlier.

According to the Central Statistics Office, the number of people classed as having no jobs in August was 181,600 — down from 183,300 last month and from 197,000 in August 2015.
