No bail for man accused of attack

Bail was refused yesterday to a man accused of going to his uncle’s house to attack him.

Jamie Saunders, aged 27, of 17 Glentrasna, The Glen, Cork, was arrested and brought before Cork District Court yesterday where Det Garda Jim Kearney objected to bail. He said it was alleged Jamie Saunders rang his uncle, Michael Saunders, and threatened him on July 14. It was further alleged Jamie Saunders later went to his uncle’s house at Father Dominic Rd armed with a knife and assaulted Michael Saunders with a car jack causing a wound to his head which required him to be hospitalised.

Det Garda Kearney said there was allegedly another incident a month ago when Jamie Saunders went to the same address on June 13 and allegedly threatened his uncle, kicked in his front door, and caused €60 worth of damage.

Jamie Saunders appeared in Cork District Court on charges of assault causing harm to Michael Saunders on July 14 and causing criminal damage on June 13. Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said these were only allegations and the prosecution was outlining claims in the bail application that would be more properly the subject for a full hearing.

Jamie Saunders’ main concern was a remand in custody would jeopardise his employment.

Insp Bill Duane put it to Jamie Saunders that Michael Saunders was in fear of him. He replied, “Most of the people on my side of the family are in fear of him [Michael Saunders].” The judge remanded the accused in custody until July 21.
