“We hope he understands that he committed a personal assault and has caused physical and psychological suffering,” tourists Claudio Schenardi, 38, and Elisa Malaspina, 27, said in their victim impact report. “He has also partially ruined our good memories of Cork and caused damage also to the image of his country.”
Kenneth Casey, aged 26, of 35 Courtown Drive, Knocknaheeny, Cork was in Cork Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing.
He admitted that, on July 25, 2015, on the steps between Clifton Terrace, Summerhill North, and Lower Glanmire Rd, he robbed Mr Schenardi of his rucksack and contents which had a value of €2,140.
It was alleged that he produced a knuckleduster during the robbery.
Dermot Sheehan, defending, said Casey had a drug and alcohol addiction at the time and has since attended for treatment for those issues. Judge Gerard O’Brien adjourned sentencing until October 27 for Casey to continue with his rehabilitation and wished him luck.
Casey came up with €1,000 compensation, Mr Sheehan said. Their camera bag was found and returned to them after a month.
The couple said they were left fearing something like this would happen again.
