A 35-year-old man who would not take no for an answer at a city centre pub picked up a stool and smashed a front window of the premises and yesterday he was ordered to pay compensation.

Man refused service smashed window with bar stool

Inspector Bill Duane said Glen Kearney was refused service at The Thomond on Marlboro St, Cork, and he reacted by picking up a stool and striking a window three times with it until the window broke.

Gardaí were called and staff at the premises followed Kearney, of 10 Mount St Joseph’s Avenue, Bakers Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, so that the culprit could be located for gardaí.

Inspector Duane said the defendant was arrested near the scene.

He was before Cork District Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the premises.

Eddie Burke, solicitor, said that the accused had no previous convictions for causing criminal damage and had no convictions at all over the past four years.

Mr Burke said the accused is the father of five children — some of whom live in Madrid — and that he divides his time between Cork and Spain.

“He suffers from depression and was on heavy medication. He had received bad news shortly before this incident and he went drinking.

“He did not give gardaí any difficulty after he caused the damage,” Mr Burke said.

Judge Aingil Ní Chondúin said yesterday she would adjourn penalty in the case for five months to give him time to gather €400 compensation for The Thomond Bar.
