Tipperary hurler Darren Gleeson faces ban from work in finance
The regulator has issued a so-called prohibition notice on Mr Gleeson, of Portroe, Nenagh, under its powers to approve senior posts at financial firms “where concerns arise about their fitness and/or probity”.
Such indefinite bans in financial firms are still rare in Ireland, and the Central Bank did not explain the circumstances that led to it imposing the prohibition notice following a legal process.
The Central Bank had previously sanctioned individuals, including disqualifying people from management of regulated financial services providers.
According to Companies Registration Office filings, Mr Gleeson was a director and secretary at Gleeson Maloney Financial Services Ltd. He resigned from the roles in early February, according to the company documents. His occupation was given as a financial adviser.
He was previously involved with Gleeson Larkin Financial Services Ltd. That company was dissolved almost four years ago.
The Central Bank has powers to ensure individuals in senior roles at a financial services firm are “competent and capable; honest, ethical, and to act with integrity; and be financially sound”.
The Central Bank said it would not provide any further comment “on the specific circumstances of the case”.
