Cork cycling network stalls
Last year Cork City and County Councils held public consultation meetings and sought submissions from cyclists with a view to producing a Cycling Network Plan for the Cork Metropolitan Area.
However, despite originally indicating that a draft of the plan would be published for public consideration in April 2015, the councils have yet to release any details of the scheme one year on.
A spokesperson for Cork County Council said that the draft final report for the project has been developed, but has to go through some environmental processes before it can be completed and published.
“During the environmental stages, some issues presented themselves and the project team has been addressing these in a step by step process for some time now. This stage has taken longer than originally anticipated and has delayed publication of the report,” the spokesperson said.
“The current position is that the project team is nearing completion of the environmental processes and expects to be in a position to complete the draft report in the coming weeks. If this stage proceeds as expected, we will be in a position to present the draft report to the elected members of both City and County Councils shortly,” he said.
“Issues that arose were potential environmental impacts of the plan in areas with an environmental designation such as Cork Harbour,” the spokesperson said.
The plan, when released, is expected to outline opportunities for new cycle routes in the city and surrounding areas, address the condition of the current cycling network and to examine possible upgrades of existing routes. The proposed plans are the latest in a series of initiatives adopted by local authorities to encourage cycling in Cork.
In 2004 the City Council formally adopted the Cork City Cycling Strategy, which saw the introduction of a number of cycle lanes and contraflow lanes across Cork.
