The Irish doctor accused of prescribing performance-enhancing drugs to sports stars has described the claims in The Sunday Times as “false and very misleading”.

The investigation alleged Mark Bonar, 38, who is based in London, claimed to have treated more than 150 sportsmen and women — including Premier League footballers, cyclists, tennis players, and boxers — with banned substances such as growth hormones and steroids.

A Twitter account purporting to belong to Dr Bonar last night, which has not been verified, read: “The Sunday Times news allegations are false and very misleading. I have never had a relationship with any Premier Football club or player.
