IRELAND

Opposition parties have rejected legal advice which suggests water charges in Ireland cannot be suspended or scrapped.

Coalition talks are set to resume this morning, despite a number of Deputies ruling themselves out of discussions. Marathon talks ended at 9pm last night, with no progress reported.

The Green Party now looks set to withdraw from talks after a second long day of discussions with Fine Gael.

Catherine Dooley, 26, from Navan in Co Meath, is a primary school teacher who graduated in November 2012. An Egyptian man who hijacked a plane is due to appear in court in Cyprus later today. The hijacker forced the EgyptAir flight to land in Cyprus, but later surrendered to police following a six-hour stand-off.

In the UK, fire crews will continue tackling a blaze at a scrap metal recycling centre in Birmingham this morning. More than 100 firefighters were drafted in to tackle the "severe" blaze involving 800 tonnes of mixed plastic, rubber and metal.

Martin O’Neill this week bemoaned his shortage of strikers with so many injuries but, not for the first time, his attack still cut — or, given the conspicuous abrasiveness of some of the players, perhaps tore — their cloth accordingly.
