North Cork towns to get new CCTV and increased surveillance

The council is providing €26,000 to install CCTV cameras in Charleville, which will be monitored on a 24-hour basis by gardaí.
A further €15,665 is to be allocated to expand CCTV coverage in Fermoy, extending the existing system on Patrick St, MacCurtain St, and Cork Rd.
In the event of funding left over, cameras will be installed to cover the local library and adjacent car park.
Cllr Frank O’Flynn (FF) said the CCTV extension in Fermoy was welcome as it had been of huge benefit to local gardaí catching law-breakers.
Cllr Noel McCarthy (FG) said if the cameras were put into the car park area it would be a major deterrent to those who were regularly dumping illegally beside the bottle banks and clothes bank.
A further €4,000 grant is to be given to Fermoy Tourist Office and €8,000 on painting grants for householders and businesses in the town centre who wish to brighten up their properties.
In Charleville, meanwhile, €12,000 has been set aside for safety repairs at the local courthouse; €17,000 for an extension of the footpath to the New Line; €10,000 for upgrading footpaths in the town park; €5,000 for Christmas lights, and a further €5,000 for a painting scheme.
Mitchelstown is getting a total of €75,000 from the fund. It includes €35,000 for upgrading footpaths at Lower Cork St and €17,000 for footpath repairs in Upper Cork St.
An additional €18,000 has been allocated to upgrade the town’s Christmas lights and €5,000 for household/business painting schemes.
