Emergency services were alerted to an incident at the Park Place apartment complex in Upper High St at around 6pm.

The baby boy, aged 11 months, was found and medical personnel immediately began treating him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A male in his 30s, understood to be a Polish national, was taken to Tralee General Hospital and was said to be in a serious condition last night.

Assistant State pathologist Dr Margot Bolster was due in the Kerry town last night to conduct a preliminary autopsy which is likely to steer the Garda investigation into the baby’s death.

The Park Place apartments are a mix of private rented and holiday accommodation and locals said gardaí and ambulance staff could be seen arriving at the apartment complex at around tea-time.

The nature of the injuries to the man brought to hospital last night was not clear and gardaí said they could not provide details regarding the nature of the incident, nor disclose who it was that raised the alarm.

Gardaí are awaiting an opportunity to interview the injured man and a number of others who were in the apartment complex, and stressed that they are keeping an open mind.

The baby’s death is being treated as suspicious and one line of inquiry is that it was a domestic incident.
