School principal takes leave to join humanitarian effort in Med

Carmel Nic Airt from Clonakilty’s Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin said she was moved by footage of the horrendous conditions in which refugees risked their lives to reach Greece from Turkey. Departing today, she will spend a month in Greece.
Ms Nic Airt had also met Syrian refugee children in Marburg, Germany, last November when she visited a school twinned with the Clonakilty Gaelscoil.
A local ‘Island to Island’ fundraising campaign was launched in West Cork in recent weeks to aid refugees.
Events included skipathons in schools, table quizzes, cake sales, music concerts, coffee days, and a Taste off Syria” night.
Every cent raised will be spent on setting up a kitchen and related facilities and on for basic food and necessary items for the refugees.
