TripAdvisor has announced its users’ favourite beaches around the world, including a top 10 for Ireland.
Clonakilty’s Inchydoney beach, described as “glorious and unspoiled”, topped the list, which was dominated by Kerry with four beaches in the top 10.
The full list is:
- Inchydoney, Co Cork;
- Derrynane, Co Kerry;
- Inch Beach, Co Kerry;
- Lahinch, Co Clare;
- Rossbeigh, Co Kerry;
- Banna, Co Kerry;
- Maghera, Co Donegal;
- Curracloe, Co Wexford;
- Renvyle, Co Galway;
- Portmarnock, Co Dublin.
The winners were determined on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period.
Kerry also featured prominently in the top Irish hotels in Ireland announced by Trivago in November with six making the top 20. However, it was Harvey’s Point near Donegal Town that topped the pile as the best-rated hotel on the island of Ireland.
While Inchydoney tops the list of the best Irish beaches, you have to travel a little farther afield to enjoy those strands deemed the best in the world by Tripadvisor users.
Grace Bay in the Turks and Caicos Islands of the Caribbean was crowned number one beach in the world.
Seven miles in length, the beach is a classic picture postcard exotic getaway, complete with turquoise water, powdery snow-white sand, and glorious sunshine year-round.
According to the travel site, the best-value time to visit Grace Bay is July when the average nightly hotel rate on TripAdvisor is €415.
The second-best-rated beach in the world is Baia do Sancho in Fernando de Noronha in Brazil.
Travellers visiting the beach in 2016 can get the best hotel rates if they book their stay in April, when the average nightly rate on TripAdvisor is a little more reasonable at €333.
However, there are also options a little close to home. The two top beaches in Europe are in Spain and Greece.
Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera — the smallest of Spain’s Balearic Islands — is ranked number one in Europe. A favourite with the rich and famous, the average nightly hotel rate in Formentera on TripAdvisor is €211 for summer 2016. The second-best-rated beach in Europe is Elafonissi Beach in Elafonissi, Crete.
Closer still is Devon’s Woolacombe Beach, the best-rated beach in the UK for the second year in a row. Second place went to Weymouth Beach in Dorset.
